DID YOU KNOW?

Contray to popular belief, the British flag is not called "The Union Jack" its actually called "The Union Flag". Its only called the Union Jack when out at sea on navy ships!

Actually, that's a popular myth and misconception. The term Union Jack is often used in official legal documentation issued by the Crown as the name of the British flag, and the only term that was ever given approval in UK parliament. It is the official name of the flag in the UK, and most of the Commonwealth.

Both terms are equally correct and official however, as it is still a union flag, but the term Union flag is context sensitive to the union you are in. In the USA, the term more accurately refers to the Grand Union Flag. The Soviet Union Flag and European Union Flag are another examples of union flags.

The idea that the 'Jack' of Union Jack derives from the jack flag is only one theory. Perhaps a more credible theory is that the term derives from the Jacobean Union, which was the name given to the union of England and Scotland under King James I of England.

It's about time this myth was put to an end.

Thanks
